In 1630, India was part of the Mughal Empire, having the city of AGRA as its official capital.

The then prince Sha Jahan met a beautiful young lady named Mumtaz Mahal, he fell in love with her, and wanted to make her his wife.

When he asked the astrologists for advice, they saw bad omens in his future, and they advised the young prince to forget about the girl...

He waited 5 years, trying to forget her, but he coudn't and finally married her. It was the second, of the four wives he would have. They had a long happy marriage for 19 years.

This was overshadowed by the death of Muntaz Mahal, when she gave birth to her fourteenth son.

Before she died, she asked her husband to build a tomb for her, and to visit her every year. Emperor Sha Jahan was devastated, and was imprisoned for many months in his palace.

When he decided to abadon his exile, he decided to fulfill his wife's desire, in the magnitude of the love he felt for her.

It took more than twenty thousand people working day and night for 22 years.

Hundreds of elephants transported the magnificent white marble, which as the sun advances takes on the most beautiful hues and the precious stones highlight the most exotic details.

It is a perfectly symmetrical walled enclosure, accessed through a large door, inside, there are more constructions, the twin buildings, the mosque, the main pool where the beauty of the construction is reflected, the gardens and the building that served to host the pilgrims.

The interior is decorated with wonderful details of geometric figures and texts of the Koran.

Sha Jahan chose to build it on the banks of the Yamuna River.

And he faithfully fulfilled his promise: by visiting the compound every anniversary of the death of his beloved until 1657 when he became seriously ill and his children began to fight for power.

It was his son Aurangzeb who never allowed his father to leave the palace again.

Sha Jahan died at the age of 74, and was buried with his wife, under the main dome of the Taj Majal.

At Los Aticos B&B, one of our superior rooms has been named after Taj Majal as a tribute to the infinite love that is possible, even in modern times.
